  • Verizon Wireless Amphitheater at Encore Park is sweating bullets over slumping ticket sales to second Eagles concert

    The Back Story:

Four years ago, The Eagles were the first group to play at the brand new Verizon Wireless Amphitheater @ Encore Park (VWA).  (The ASO opener was the first actual *concert* at the amphitheater).  Evidently there was a lot of pent-up demand for (a) a new concert venue in Alpharetta, (b) The Eagles, and (c) the desire to go to see the Eagles at a brand new concert venue.  As a result, the first Eagles show at the new venue sold-out immediately.  As did the second, and the third.  A fourth show was added that also "sold out" but I say that in quotes because it was only ever "almost sold out" - there were always tickets available to show #4 in the last few rows of the expensive section (like section 105, row Z).  But the press and promoters didn't mind overlooking this and talking about how all four of the Eagles shows sold out... it just sounded better to say it like that.

We went to the fourth Eagles show at the venue in 2008 with some neighbors, and yes it was fun to see the Eagles as well as laugh at the creepy drunk in front of us.  The buzz generated by a new venue that pulled in great acts in its first year was encouraging.  Since we (and most everyone around us) hadn't seen the Eagles before, it was still a new experience, and a concert worth going to if you can stomach the ticket prices.

    Fast-Forward to Today:
The Eagles are a touring machine, and they are now back 4 years later to VWA.  This time, things are a bit different.  The American Economy is weary.  The Eagles may be reaching their concert touring point of saturation (or may have already passed it).  The novelty of the venue has worn off.

The first Eagles concert for May 4 2012 at VWA went on pre-sale on February 13th (pre-sales generally only have lousy seats).  Ticket sales seemed brisk, I suppose.  A second show was added for May 2 2012 with ticket sales starting March 12th.  However, maybe it was a bit of a stretch to add a second show - after all, the first show never  "sold out" - but it had strong ticket sales; the "good seats" went quick, the lawn seats sold out, and the only tickets left were at the back edges of the expensive section (again like section 105, row Z).  When the second show went on sale, however, it appeared that everyone that wanted to see the Eagles had already bought tickets for the first show.  Based on my unscientific observations, for the first 10 minutes it looked like ticket sales for the second show might be strong.  The "good" reserved seats up front were not available, only moderately decent reserved seats were available, about 1/2 way back (the back of ORCH or front of sections 101-105).  These reserved seats cost $185 each before fees.   However, after a while, it became evident that sales were soft; the lawn seats ($65 each) were still readily available, and continue to be available (these had sold out readily before), and the reserved seats sales were faltering.  Uh oh. Soft demand.

    The Concern:
So I'm guessing that after a week or so someone in charge of ticket management must be looking at this and realizing that far fewer of the overall tickets were sold for the second Eagles show than originally anticipated.  This looks bad.  There would be huge gaps of unsold seats in the reserved seating section, and the lawn would not look packed.  All the "good seats" that they held back from being available right when the show went on sale would be empty.  Not good to have the first 15 rows of reserved seats empty.

So here's what it looks like "they" did, ~10 days after the second show went on sale:

    1) Stop the ability for anyone to search for and order any available seats on the first show (May 4), so anyone who wants to go now will be forced to buy tickets for the second added show (May 2).  I have never seen this done before - in the past you were *always* allowed to search for tickets on ticketmaster.com, even if a show was long sold out.  It adds to the mystique. but now, they've forced you to buy from the second show:

    Soldout1

    2) Free up the "good" seats for the second show.  Good seats like 4 -6 rows back from the stage - seats like ORCH 3 Row D.   Seats that would have re-sold for many hundreds of dollars to the Eagles concert 4 years ago, now easily available at (but still expensive) list price, to anyone who happens to search on ticketmaster.com or go to the box office.

    Eaglestix

So the question is, will there be any deals for this second Eagles concert?  Like 2 for 1 tickets?  Discounts through 3rd party sites like goldstar?  Groupon deals?  More "Platinum" seats being quietly release for general sale at regular prices?   It remains to be seen.  But one thing remains clear:  No need to add a third or fourth Eagles show this year.

The 2012 Camaro ZL1 proves its record speed and power after a run through the legendary Nürburgring

The 2012 Camaro ZL1 was recently let loose on the Nürburgring racing circuit and recorded a lap of 7:41.27, nearly a 40 second leap ahead of the Camaro SS lap time in 2009.

“The ZL1’s full capability is evident at the Nürburgring,” said Aaron Link, the Camaro ZL1 Suspension Engineer. “You have to have an extremely well-mannered, confidence-inspiring car to take any corner at 160 mph without lifting off the throttle…and the ZL1 was just brilliant.”

Nürburgring is unparalleled, being widely regarded as one of the world’s most-demanding courses, measuring 12.9 miles with over 154 turns. Over the years, the racing circuit has come to be popularly referred to as “The Green Hell”.

“The Nürburgring is unlike any track in the world,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “Each lap includes fast straights, sweeping off-camber turns, hairpin corners, and elevation changes. In order to do well on the ‘Ring, the car has to do everything well – including acceleration, braking and lateral grip. Breaking an 8 minute lap in a 2+2 production car is a tremendous accomplishment.”

Not only does the car pack its punch in speed, but also in power. It features a supercharged 6.2L “LSA” engine SAE-rated at 580 horsepower (432 kW) and 556 lb.-ft of torque (754 Nm).

With its epic trek through Nürburgring, it’s pretty evident that it packs the power and speed fit for the thrill of the racetrack.

  • Go to a local high school football, basketball or any other game.
  • Take the kids on a mystery trip. Give them clues about your destination as you get closer. It can be something as simple as an ice cream shop or playground, or a trip to a museum or amusement park.
  • Put on a family play.
  • Let your children prepare a meal and serve it to you and your husband restaurant style.
  • Plant flowers (indoors in a flower pot or outside).
  • Get to know the family of one of your child's friends by having the family over for a cookout.
  • Let your kids take photos, print them, and make a photo album — then have the kids think of captions.
  • Have a fun, free scavenger hunt.
  • Go to a park and take some pictures of landscapes. Develop the pictures, get out the paints and try to paint landscapes by looking at the pictures.
  • Go on a bike ride that ends with a picnic.
  • For girls: have a spa hour — paint each other's nails, do your hair, let them put makeup on you.
  • Build an obstacle course and let each family member compete for the best time.
  • Have a garage sale and let your kids decide how to spend the proceeds on a family day.
  • Plan a secret surprise for someone in need.  For example, cook a meal for someone or mow their lawn, without them knowing who did it.
  • Camp out in your back yard.
  • Let the kids help you paint their room.  Let them pick out the paint color. (It might get them to actually clean it first!)
  • Play board games.
  • Do a craft (make up your own or a buy a craft kit). Bake cookies, bread or a cake — from scratch.
  • Let your children design a family crest.
  • Go ice skating or roller skating.
